Group sessions offering people a mindful, expressive, joyful and relaxing approach to art-making that gives rise to a sense of positive wellbeing.

I run ‘Wellbeing Arts’ and ‘Creative Health’ sessions across Bristol and North Somerset for adults, and children and young people.  These sessions form part of a Social Prescribing or Arts-on-Referral initiative, whereby people are ‘referred’ by their GP, a Link Worker, or a mental health professional into a closed creative group that has therapeutic benefits.  Some of these groups take ‘self-referrals’.

What are Arts-on-Referral and Social Prescribing?

The National Centre for Creative Health has created this booklet, which gives clear and concise information about the different ways Arts-on-Referral can help different people, and why Creative Health Care matters to us all.

People access Social Prescribing services for all sorts of reasons and will be referred for support with their emotional, social or physical wellbeing.  Participants might be struggling with one or a number of issues, and these may include bereavement, a transition from hospital, recovery from addiction, ongoing or chronic mental health or physical health conditions, loneliness and isolation, or homelessness.

Working as a group, people enjoy the structure and gentle pace of these sessions, and find that they have positive experiences and outcomes as a result of learning new skills and taking part in something that is joyful, regular, relaxing, creative, and process-led.  Research also shows this: where people experience improved symptoms, the risk of developing further or new symptoms is reduced, and waiting lists for services are shortened.
